Analysing the situation in perspective, it seems clear that today we find ourselves in a new <strong>epidemiological scenario<\/strong> with respect to <strong>viral vector diseases<\/strong> that affect ruminants, specifically <strong>orbiviruses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>What factors motivate the scenario in which we are moving?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>There are several factors that motivate this current scenario and that will probably condition even more the <strong>recirculation of these viruses in Europe<\/strong> during the next years: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Climate change<\/strong> is logically behind the expansion of the <em><strong>culicoides<\/strong><\/em>, since there are milder temperatures in winter and longer periods of temperatures within the <strong>vector&#8217;s activity range<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The appearance of new serotypes <\/strong> such as BTV3, which is much more virulent and, therefore, has a greater <strong>economic impact<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The high infection pressure<\/strong> of both EHDV and multiple BTV serotypes on the <strong>ruminant <\/strong> population leads to animals infected with more than one serotype, increasing the <strong>risk of genetic recombination<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The wild ruminant population <\/strong> is also affected, providing a <strong>reservoir for both viruses.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thus, in practice, <strong>vaccines <\/strong> are the <strong>only tool<\/strong> for the battle against <strong>vector-borne<\/strong> and <strong>multi-host diseases<\/strong>, such as <strong>EHD or BT<\/strong>. <strong>Vaccines decrease the infective pressure <\/strong> on the sheep and cattle population, thereby helping to avoid new recombinations that may generate strains that are more virulent and\/or more unpredictable in their behaviour.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/syva.es\/enfermedades\/hablemos-de-rumiantes-n1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9865\" src=\"https:\/\/syva.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Banner-cabecera-titulo-newsletter-Hablemos-de-rumiantes.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1048\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/syva.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Banner-cabecera-titulo-newsletter-Hablemos-de-rumiantes.png 1048w, https:\/\/syva.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Banner-cabecera-titulo-newsletter-Hablemos-de-rumiantes-300x63.png 300w, https:\/\/syva.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Banner-cabecera-titulo-newsletter-Hablemos-de-rumiantes-768x161.png 768w, https:\/\/syva.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Banner-cabecera-titulo-newsletter-Hablemos-de-rumiantes-510x107.png 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1048px) 100vw, 1048px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you are involved in the production of cattle or small ruminants, it is very likely that, in the last two years, you have been confronted with the Bluetongue  virus (BT\/BTV) or the Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease virus (EHD\/EHDV); from a clinical point of view, or because of the impact on animal movements.
