Congratulations!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The winning thesis was presented under the supervision of Drs Luis Miguel Ortega Mora, Ignacio Ferre P\u00e9rez and Michela Tatiana Re.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Roberto S\u00e1nchez S\u00e1nchez is a vet who graduated from Le\u00f3n University (2012) and was awarded a Doctorate \u201ccum laude\u201d from Madrid Complutense University, with a minor International Doctorate (2018).<\/p>\n<p>He is currently a postdoctorate researcher with the UCM\u2019s SALUVET group and has a contract with the Technological Platform for Research into Animal Health (PLATESA) for the Community of Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>The Selection Board was chaired by Dr C\u00e9sar B. Guti\u00e9rrez Mart\u00edn (ULE), and comprised of Drs Ricardo de la Fuente L\u00f3pez (UCM), Javier Lucientes Curdi (Unizar) and Rosario Bullido G\u00f3mez de las Heras (AEMPS). It also included Dr Maria Luisa de Arriba Mart\u00edn, from Laboratorios Syva.<\/p>\n<p>The research topic tackled Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum, apicomplexan parasites responsible for reproductive failure in ovine-caprine livestock and bovine livestock, respectively. Moreover, T. gondii is a zoonotic agent with broad global distribution. Animal models are an essential tool to study the pathogeny of disease and to develop drugs and vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, there are no effective drugs to treat these diseases in ruminants. The calcium dependent protein, kinase 1 (CDPK1), has recently been reported, against which a group of drugs known as \u201cBumped Kinase Inhibitors\u201d (BKIs) have been developed with promising results.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the thesis was to normalize expectant ovine models with T. gondii and N. caninum infection and, using these, evaluate the safety and efficacy of BKIs.
