[‘Let’s talk about ruminants’ n°1] Message from César Carnicer to vets

I am proud to introduce the first issue of the newsletter ‘Let’s talk about ruminants’. This newsletter is part of our ‘Let’s talk’ initiative, which was launched a few months ago with the help of leading international scientists. This initiative was born as a consequence of the importance of the so-called ‘emerging vector-borne diseases’ such as bluetongue or epizootic haemorrhagic disease. Now, with ‘Let’s talk about ruminants’, we want to provide you with a tool that will provide you with professional updates and information that will be useful in your passion, which is also ours.

We are a company dedicated exclusively to veterinary medicine, and especially to farm animals, which allows us to have a deep knowledge of the sector and its real needs. Our vocation is focused on providing innovative and effective solutions, with special emphasis on prevention.

Our name reveals this DNA

Some of you may not know that the name Syva originally stood for Sueros y Vacunas (Serums and Vaccines). This origin reflects our “raison d’être” and our commitment to the protection of animal health. A clear example of this was our rapid response to the threat of the Bluetongue disease in our country: we were at the forefront with our range of Syvazul^® vaccines, and when serotype 3 aggravated the situation, we obtained authorisation in just 8 months for the temporary use of our Syvazul^® BTV3 vaccine in emergency situations. After the Netherlands, several European countries have granted us this authorisation, including Spain. Today, the European Medicines Agency issued a positive opinion on the granting of the Marketing Authorisation (MA) for sheep. This is an important new step that reinforces confidence in vaccination and the certainty of having optimal vaccine coverage in Europe, which will allow us to effectively battle against bluetongue as happened when we obtained the marketing authorisation for serotypes 1, 4 and 8.

Our experience is also at your service when it comes to other emerging diseases that threaten ruminants.

Prevention has also been key against another recent threat: Epizootic Haemorrhagic Disease. In response to this situation, we have developed Syvac^® EH Marker, an innovative subunit vaccine that allows vaccinated animals to be differentiated from infected animals (DIVA technology). This tool not only facilitates the effective control of the disease, but also helps to protect the livestock population and guarantee the flow of animal trade. These achievements are tangible facts, not just words. At Syva, our aim is for you to recognise us as a Spanish and European company, committed to the present and future of the sector.
