First training cycle on vector-borne diseases in the Netherlands
In October, Syva completed the first training cycle on vector-borne diseases in the Netherlands, bringing together veterinarians from the regions most affected by BTV-3. These sessions provided an opportunity to share experiences and prepare future vaccination and prevention strategies..
At the end of October, Syva concluded the first training cycle on vector-borne diseases for Dutch veterinarians.
Over several weeks, our team met professionals from three regions of the country, all severely affected by the BTV-3 serotype in 2023 and 2024. In total, around thirty veterinarians took part in these training sessions, organised in partnership with Alivira.
The aim of this programme was to share the main lessons learned during 2024 and prepare for the next vaccination campaign, thus strengthening the prevention of vector-borne diseases.
From the very beginning, we wanted to give veterinarians a voice — to hear first-hand their experiences during this challenging period. When asked, “What word best describes how you felt about BTV-3?”, their answers were telling: discouragement, helplessness, serious damage, strong impact… and “Oh dear… what’s next?”
Among the speakers, Bernd Hietberg, from the Het Drentse Hart veterinary clinic, shared with great pedagogy and passion his experience during the outbreak, the lessons drawn from his clinical observations, and his vision for a collective approach to managing these diseases.
While, Stéphane Liétard presented the main available data on vaccines and the experiences gained from vaccination campaigns in various European countries, as well as an important update on Syva’s vaccine, now more practical and competitive.
These meetings were made possible thanks to the collaboration with Alivira. We would like to extend our warm thanks to Pieter and Faas for their excellent organisation, as well as to the hosts who welcomed us so kindly: Bjorn van Alphen (adVee Dierenartsen Ysselstein), Jetse Ritsema (Groups Praktijk Dierenarsten Barneveld), and the Julius-Hoeve dairy farm in Kamperveen.
With this first cycle — and the ones to come — we reaffirm our commitment to veterinarians and farmers: to listen, to share experiences, and to build together better vaccination and prevention strategies against vector-borne diseases.
