In her interview, Inés speaks about the new advances in the fight against this disease, but also about the many unknowns that remain to be elucidated about the immunopathogenesis of the virus and its different strains, and about the paths that still need to be investigated in order to achieve this.
Indeed, 40 years after its emergence, this virus is still one of the pathogens with the greatest economic impact in the pig sector, due to the absence of fully effective control tools. In addition to affecting the reproductive tract of breeding sows and the respiratory system of young animals, it is often associated with other secondary diseases. PRRSV is also characterised by the wide diversity of clinical signs it causes in infected animals. The disease can range from asymptomatic or subclinical to severe reproductive and respiratory disease. Depending on the strain and its virulence, on-farm mortality can reach 100%.

In the opinion of the jury that voted it the best thesis in animal health of the 26th edition of the Syva Prize, the thesis of Inés Ruedas represents a fundamental advance in the knowledge of the pathogenesis of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and a reference for future studies. It is this type of thesis and research that Syva wishes to promote and highlight in each edition of the Syva Prize.
When we asked Inés how winning the Syva award, undoubtedly the most valued animal health prize in the Spanish scientific community, has changed her life, she replied: “Winning the Syva award has been a truly transformative experience at all levels of my life”. … Inés also highlights the incredible emotional boost of winning this prize, the great confidence in her abilities and potential as a researcher, but also the doors that have opened professionally, the impact on her visibility in the world and the interest generated by her work and that of the team that has accompanied her, which includes Librado Carrasco (thesis tutor), Jaime Gómez Laguna (thesis supervisor), and Irene Rodríguez Gómez (thesis supervisor).
