The Jury announces the winners of the Syva Award 2026

The Jury of the Syva Award International has announced the decision for the 29th edition. Composed of renowned academics and researchers in the field of animal health, the Jury assessed the applications based on strict criteria of scientific rigor, innovation, and applicability. This process ensures the quality of the award and reinforces its position as one of the most prestigious distinctions in animal health.

In this edition, the Jury particularly highlighted:

The high scientific standard of the submitted applications.
The relevance of the research for animal health and its impact on public health.
The growing participation and international scope of the award, reflecting the global interest it generates.

Winning these

The winner of this edition is Gerard Badía Bringué, for his doctoral thesis:

“Early diagnosis, genomic resistance to bovine paratuberculosis, and regulation of the host response against this infection.”

His research represents a significant contribution to the fight against paratuberculosis, addressing disease control through early detection strategies and the genetic selection of animals with resistance markers.

First Accessit:

Awarded to Judith Guitart Matas for her doctoral thesis:
“Integrating multi-omics to monitor gut microbiome and resistome dynamics in weaned piglets.” Her work analyzes the different treatments used to control post-weaning diarrhea in piglets, evaluating their effects not only on disease resolution but also on the intestinal microbiota and antibiotic resistance profiles, using advanced technologies such as genomics and transcriptomics.

Second Accessit:

Awarded to Enrique Riera Ferrer for his thesis: “A gill-ty parasite: Biological aspects of the ectoparasitic flatworm Sparicotyle chrysophrii and its interactions with gilthead seabream”. This study focuses on a parasite responsible for significant economic losses in seabream production, exploring the fish’s response to infection and identifying potential therapeutic targets for the development of treatments or vaccines.

Supporting young talent and research

With nearly three decades of history, the Syva Award showcases emerging research talent and promotes scientific excellence and innovation. Organized by Syva in collaboration with the University of León, it has recognized since 1998 the best doctoral thesis in animal health, particularly in areas such as microbiology, immunology, and infectious and parasitic diseases.

Beyond academic excellence, the award also fosters knowledge transfer to the veterinary sector and industry.
