Vaccination for control and prevention of anthrax outbreaks
Anthrax is a serious disease caused by highly virulent spores of the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. If effective measures are not taken, anthrax can decimate herds of many farm animals, including cattle and horses.
Although the disease has become less common, thanks to an effective global eradication plan set up by the OIE and WHO, several cases have recently been reported during August and September in Spain.
This highly contagious disease, which is extremely easily transmitted to humans, among others, by simple skin contact, must be reported to the competent veterinary authorities.
What are the symptoms of this disease? How is this disease transmitted? What precautions should farmers take on a daily basis? What should be done if a case of anthrax is suspected in the herd? What solutions exist to treat and prevent the development of Bacillus Anthracis? These are some of the questions that RumiNews asked our veterinary expert in bovine and small ruminants, Raúl Martínez Fernández.
