An educational video to raise awareness about vaccination against Bluetongue

In Europe, a silent threat looms over livestock: the Bluetongue disease. Caused by the bluetongue virus, it is a major threat to ruminants, especially sheep and cattle. It is transmitted from animal to animal by tiny Culicoides midges that bite them. In this way, the disease spreads and causes severe clinical signs, sometimes even death. Bluetongue disease causes significant economic losses and disrupts animal health and international trade. The recent emergence of serotype 3 in September 2023 represents a new challenge. This variant is spreading very rapidly and is very virulent compared to the other serotypes observed to date. A warmer global climate is prolonging the breeding season of Culicoides, and more frequent warm upwelling streams are favouring its geographic spread. Proactive vaccination remains the most effective measure to control the disease in all regions at risk.

For more than 20 years, Syva has been working closely with veterinarians and farmers, protecting millions of cattle and sheep against the bluetongue virus. With this aim in mind, and to raise awareness of the devastating consequences of this disease for sheep and cattle farmers, we have developed this short educational video. Join us in supporting veterinarians and farmers in this crucial challenge and feel free to share this video.
