Syva Award International: the award continues to open to the world

Applications for the 29th edition of the Syva Award International closed on February 22 at midnight. This year, 31 theses were submitted, once again demonstrating the strong interest that the Syva Prize generates among young PhD graduates and scientific institutions in the field of animal health.

Spanish applications remain very strongly represented, with 23 theses submitted, a level comparable to last year and consistent with the long history of the prize. This strong foundation reflects the long-standing relationship of trust built between Syva, young researchers and Spanish scientific institutions, which have supported the development and recognition of the Syva Award over the years.

One of the most striking features of this edition is the growing diversity in the origin of applications. Theses were received from Belgium, France, Finland, Portugal, Italy, the United Kingdom, and even Chile. This evolution illustrates the progressive recognition of the Syva Award beyond the borders of Spain and Europe, as well as the growing interest it generates among animal health PhD graduates and an ever wider scientific community. Belgian universities, already present in the two previous editions, once again confirm their regular participation in this scientific challenge.

The selection process promises to be demanding. Spanish universities, long familiar with the criteria and the process of the Syva Award, are now joined by research teams from other countries, helping to enrich the competition and strengthen its international dimension. Last year’s edition provided a clear illustration of this: among the three theses distinguished, one of the awards was granted to a thesis carried out in Belgium by a young Italian PhD graduate in animal health.

With a main prize of €18,000 and two runner-up prizes of €3,500 each, the Syva Award International has, for the past three years, highlighted three research careers every year, thus offering several opportunities for recognition to young researchers who have chosen to dedicate their careers to improving animal health.

In the coming weeks, the international jury will meet to select the winners of this 29th edition. In the meantime, Syva would like to warmly thank all candidates for their participation and trust, as well as the universities and research institutions that support them in their work.

Through their commitment, these researchers contribute very concretely to the progress of animal health and to the development of innovative solutions for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, epizootics and zoonoses, for the benefit of livestock, companion animals and, more broadly, the entire global health ecosystem.
